Eliason Square is a commercial, retail, and residential complex that consists of the original Eliason Building. It was built in 1907 as an original mid-century addition renovated to become 2 levels. Then, a new 25,000 square foot, 3 story residential wing was added to the back of the site. Over the years, the building’s interiors have been through many remodels. Because of this, a full remodel was necessary to reconstruct the needed structural support. To preserve the history of the building, the general layout was maintained and care was taken to keep the exteriors faithful to the original, historic styling.
This project is located in the main downtown, commercial area of Poulsbo. The location drove the design to highlight what makes Poulsbo unique. It is a vibrant seaside community, with strong historical, Nordic roots that welcomes locals and tourists alike. The original building looked to its historical past for inspiration of style and custom detailing, through hand-carved Nordic or coastal architecture. The new, residential block was visually broken up into segments to emulate the European urban housing style. A corner plaza with public art was created to visually soften the street corner and act as the gateway to the commercial district. This corner plaza also provides a public outdoor gathering space welcoming to all.
