Client: Christian Care Communities of Louisville

In order to remain as the "provider of choice" in long term care in Kentucky, Christian Care Communities of Louisville commissioned Wattenbarger Architects to reposition an existing continuing care community in Bowling Green. To achieve this goal includes adding pieces missing from the continuum of care, such as patio homes and independent apartments, alzheimer's care and assisted living, changing both operationally and physically how skilled nursing is delivered, and adding a wellness center, theater, chapel, varied dining venues and other amenities to the commons that becomes the new campus center.

Separate assisted living, skilled nursing and memory care houses are created to the east. Each house is designed to be a self-contained entity with all food and service provided within. T he houses are linked by opening to a common green space that is the circulation spine for moving from any of the housed to and from the commons building and its amenities. 24 patio homes and 24 additional independent apartments are created on a 4 acre parcel to the north.

The commons is all about choice. The new commons replaces the existing common area for the independent living and the existing health center. As a result, the phasing of construction in order to keep amenities and activity areas available to the residents during construction became as much of a plan generator as the need to respond to the new facilities to the north and east. New common areas and services are varied and are oriented to take advantage of views to the outdoors and the large outdoor courtyard at the heart of the new commons and existing independent living buildings.
